Subclass 494 and 407 F2019L00277
Occupations for the subclass 407 training visa: LIN 19/050
LIN 19/050 specifies the occupations, and their ANZSCO codes, for subclass 407 (Training) visa nominations, in three lists: the MLTSSL, the Regional Occupation List and the STSOL.
The Migration (LIN 19/050: Specification of Occupations–Subclass 407 Visa) Instrument 2019 was made on 5 March 2019 by the Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs under paragraph 2.72B(3)(b) of the Migration Regulations 1994 (section 3). It commenced on 11 March 2019 and repealed IMMI 18/050 (section 11). This page describes Compilation No. 1, in force from 14 December 2024, which includes amendments to sections 6 and 7 made by Schedule 6 to LIN 24/083 (Endnotes 3 and 4).
The explanatory statement, written for the instrument as made, says it operates to specify the skilled occupations for an application, or proposed application, for a subclass 407 (Training) visa, allocated across three lists, and that its purpose is to update the occupations on those lists after labour market advice from the Department of Jobs and Small Business. It records that 27 occupations were taken off the Short-term Skilled Occupation List at that time.
The three lists
Section 6 specifies every occupation on any of the three lists, with its 6-digit ANZSCO code. An occupation applies to the holder of, or applicant or proposed applicant for, a subclass 407 visa if the tasks to be performed correspond to the tasks in that code (section 6(c)).
| List | Section | Occupations |
|---|---|---|
| Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List | 7 | 216 |
| Regional Occupation List | 8 | 77 |
| Short-term Skilled Occupation List | 9 | 216 |
Each table has two columns: occupation and ANZSCO code. No ANZSCO code appears on more than one list, so the three lists hold 509 occupations between them. The lists begin with chief executive or managing director (111111), aquaculture farmer (121111) and flower grower (121212) respectively. Some entries carry carve-outs in the occupation column itself: item 24 of the Short-term Skilled Occupation List is specialist managers (nec) except ambassador, archbishop or bishop. Section 7(2) excludes item 13 of the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List where the position is an exotic dancer. The full lists are in the instrument.
Which applications it applies to
Section 10 applies the instrument to an application for approval of a nomination made on or after 11 March 2019. Under section 11, IMMI 18/050, as in force immediately before that day, continues to apply to a nomination application made before it.
Questions and answers
Which occupations can be nominated for a subclass 407 visa?
Any occupation on the three lists in sections 7, 8 and 9 of LIN 19/050: 216 on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, 77 on the Regional Occupation List and 216 on the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (Compilation No. 1, 14 December 2024).
Are these the same lists as for the skilled visas?
LIN 19/050 sets its own lists for paragraph 2.72B(3)(b). The lists for subclass 189, 190, 491 and 485 visas are in LIN 19/051 (F2019L00278), and their item counts differ.
