Victorian Points Test questions.
What is the Victorian Points Test (VPT)?
It is the ranking Victoria uses to select Registrations of Interest for nomination for the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) and the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491). Seven weighted factors make up the total: age, English language, years of experience in the nominated occupation, education, occupation skill level, partner’s skill, and annual earnings from skilled employment in Victoria.
The total is worked out from your SkillSelect Expression of Interest and your Victorian Registration of Interest.
Is the Victorian Points Test the same as the SkillSelect points test?
No. The Australian Government’s points test decides whether you are eligible for the visa, and it requires at least 65 points. The VPT is Victoria’s own scale, used to rank Registrations of Interest against each other for Victorian nomination. You need both: a SkillSelect score of at least 65, and a VPT total high enough to be invited.
What is the pass mark for the Victorian Points Test?
There is none. Victoria invites the Registrations of Interest with the highest VPT totals in each invitation round, so the total needed depends on who else is in the pool at the time of that round.
How does Victoria choose who to invite?
Through regular invitation rounds, in two ways. Every Registration of Interest is considered for both where it qualifies:
- Most competitive: the highest VPT totals across all eligible occupations in the pool.
- Priority industry: the highest VPT totals within each priority industry or industry subgroup.
Applicants in every eligible occupation can submit a Registration of Interest; the priority industry route is an additional way in for the occupations on the list.
Which industries are Victorian priority industries for 2026–27?
Healthcare, social assistance, education (teachers and early childhood education) and construction (construction professionals and construction trades). The full occupation list, with ANZSCO codes, is on this page. For early childhood teachers, Victoria prioritises Registrations of Interest with at least one year of relevant work experience and Proficient or Superior English.
How do I get the 50 partner points in the Victorian Points Test?
All three of these must be true:
- you have claimed 10 points for Partner Skills in your SkillSelect EOI;
- your partner will be included in your state nominated visa application; and
- your partner’s occupation is a current priority industry occupation.
Applicants who are single, have an Australian partner, or do not meet all three receive 0 for this factor.
How do Victorian earnings points work?
They are for annual earnings from current skilled employment in Victoria. Points start at 8 for $80,000–$84,999 and rise in $5,000 bands to 150 for $170,000 and over. Below $80,000, or with no current skilled employment in Victoria, the factor scores 0.
How much does a Victorian Registration of Interest cost in 2026–27?
$60, or $66 including GST. If you are invited and lodge a nomination application for the 190 or 491, that costs $180, or $198 including GST. GST of 10% applies if you are in Australia when you pay.
The Registration of Interest fee is charged once per program year, so withdrawing and submitting a new one in the same year is not charged again. A new nomination application fee applies each time you submit a nomination application. Only Visa and Mastercard are accepted, and the fees are generally non-refundable, including when no invitation follows or the nomination is refused.
These are Victoria’s fees. The Department of Home Affairs visa application charge is separate: see our visa fee calculator.
Does my Victorian Registration of Interest from last year still count?
No. A Registration of Interest is valid only for the program year in which it is submitted. To be considered in 2026–27 you must log in to the Live in Melbourne portal and submit a new Registration of Interest when the program opens. As at 13 October 2026, Live in Melbourne said information about the 2026–27 opening would be provided when available.
Can Victoria estimate my chances of an invitation?
No. Victoria states it cannot tell you your likelihood of being invited or how your points compare with other applicants, and that an invitation or a successful nomination is not guaranteed. It also does not prioritise invitations for personal circumstances such as age or an expiring visa.
Does this calculator store my answers?
No. It runs in your browser. If you choose “Send my result to us”, the result goes into the enquiry form on this page for you to send. Our privacy policy explains how we handle enquiries.
For the 190 and 491 visas themselves, read our skilled migration guide.
