How visa application charges work.
What does the estimate cover?
The visa application charge the Department will ask for when you apply, including any charge for family members and the subsequent temporary application charge.
It does not include health examinations, police certificates, English tests, biometrics, translations or professional fees. Some visas have a second instalment payable before grant, which the estimator may not show.
The Department’s estimate is the figure its systems give on the day. It does not guarantee what you will be charged. If you have already lodged and want to add someone, the charge is worked out differently.
What makes up the visa application charge?
Two instalments. The first is paid when you apply. It is the base application charge for the main applicant, or the additional applicant charge for each family member included in the application, plus any subsequent temporary application charge and any non-internet application charge. Some visas also have a second instalment, paid before the visa is granted.
What is the subsequent temporary application charge?
An extra charge on some temporary visas applied for in Australia, where the visa you hold now, or the last substantive visa you held, was also applied for in Australia. It does not apply if that earlier visa was granted by operation of law, by the Minister personally, or without an application, or as a newborn child added to a parent’s application. The calculator above works it out for each applicant.
Why does the fee depend on my passport?
Some visas carry a lower charge for holders of particular passports. The subclass 485, for example, has lower charges for holders of a Pacific-regional passport. That is why the calculator asks for the country of your passport on those visas.
Can the charge be refunded?
Only in the circumstances the Regulations list or the Minister specifies. Examples in the regulation include an application that was unnecessary when it was made, an application made because of a mistake by the Department, and an applicant who dies before a decision.
Does the estimate include your professional fees?
